Our goats are primarily crossbred.
The primary breeds are Boer and Spanish. We also have some crosses
with Kiko, dairy and to a smaller degree even some other breeds.
Our goats are expected to earn their
living. They are being used to control various noxious weeds, buck
brush, cedar trees, thistles and other problem plants common to this area.
They are offered proper salt and minerals
year round. During the winter months they are supplemented with hay,
protein tubs and grain along with their minerals. The amount fed depends
upon the weather and availability and quality of other forages.
Along with pasture improvement,
they are also expected to be hardy enough to
handle most weather without the benefit of barns. They need to
have good maternal traits and be able to look after and raise their kids
in these same conditions with minimal assistance from a herder. Under
these conditions, only the strong survive. I am proud to say we have
had very minimal losses.
